AOR SEARCHLIGHT "README.TXT" FILE
***************************************************************************
This file contains information not included in the printed manual or
help files.
DEMO DISK
---------
If you are using the demonstration disk, the program will run for 10
minutes before stopping. You can run the program again, but only for another
10 minute period. You will also not be able to save memory data. IN ALL
OTHER RESPECTS THE DEMO PROGRAM IS THE SAME AS THE FULL VERSION.
When you order the full version of AOR Searchlight you should delete
the "AOR Demo" program group and erase the "C:\AORDEMO" directory from your
hard disk. A new program group is created for the full installation.
SPEED OF TUNING OPERATIONS
--------------------------
The speed of tuning operations over RS-232 is much slower than
directly from the radio's front panel. This is because the radio must
receive RS-232 commands, process them and produce a response. No
communications handling is needed for operations from the radio's own
front panel. Under Windows, tuning operations are further slowed by
the response time of your system.
You can adjust the delay period used for tuning and S-meter reads,
for optimum performance, from the "Setup|Delays" menu option. However, the
maximum speed of tuning operations during scanning operations will probably
still be limited by the speed of your system when running Windows.
You can optimise your tuning speed by:
1. Choosing minimum tuning and S-meter delays that work with your radio
2. Not running other applications in the background
3. Covering the VFO status window, or minimising it, to reduce redrawing
As a guide, you should be able to obtain maximum scanning speeds
using the following timings:
AR-3000A AR-3000
Tuning 10 ms 20 ms
S-meter 10 ms 60 ms
Upload 250 ms 250 ms
Download 150 ms 150 ms
HELP INFORMATION
----------------
Extensive help information is available through the context sensitive
hypertext help system provided by Windows. The size of the user's manual has
been reduce to take this into account. Detailed printed manuals are no longer
needed by most Windows users.
RUNNING WINDOWS AND AOR SEARCHLIGHT FROM THE DOS PROMPT
-------------------------------------------------------
Normally, AOR Searchlight should be started within Windows by double
clicking on the icon within the AOR Searchlight group in Program Manager.
However, it is also possible to start Windows and launch AOR Searchlight from
your DOS prompt using the following sequence of commands:
CD\SEARCH
WIN SEARCH
This assumes that the directory containing the program files is the
default "\SEARCH" directory.
You may find it useful to create a batch file with these commands in
it if you frequently need to start AOR Searchlight in this way.
RUNNING MULTIPLE COPIES OF AOR SEARCHLIGHT
------------------------------------------
Windows allows up to four serial ports to be used by application
software. Normally, one is reserved for the mouse, which leaves three that
can be used by AOR Searchlight. More than one copy of Searchlight can be
used at the same time if you have more than one AOR radio connected to your
computer.
You can run more than one copy of AOR Searchlight by launching each
copy from the program group one after the other. Each additional copy of AOR
Searchlight uses the default setup obtained from "SEARCH.INI". Use the
Setup|Communications option of the main menu to change the serial port to that
used with your additional radios.
The current serial port, and it's parameters, is displayed in the title
of the main AOR Searchlight window.
Only the original copy of AOR Searchlight can alter the "SEARCH.INI"
file.
KEYBOARD OPERATION
------------------
You can use your keyboard to operate controls in the Front Panel window.
The following keys are active:
A Select VFO A
B Select VFO B
U Tune up one step
D Tune down one step
+ Increase step size
- Decrease step size
O Set VFO offset
S Enter user step size
N Toggle attenuator
T Toggle VFO tracking
<F1> Select AM mode
<F2> Select CW mode
<F3> Select USB mode
<F4> Select LSB mode
<F5> Select FM mode
<F6> Select FMW mode
SOUND RECORDING
---------------
This is probably the most powerful feature of the software. There are
no special procedures needed for using sound recording: AOR Searchlight uses
standard Windows API functions and should work perfectly with all compatible
sound cards.
A common problem is blank recordings either when recording or playing
back. If you have this problem, you probably need to check the settings
controlled by the mixer utility that came with your card. You need to make
sure that audio from the radio is the input source (normally the "line" input)
and that wave audio (referred to as "Voc" by Creative Labs Sound Blaster) is
selected for output.
Please refer to your sound card manuals for further details.
COPY PROTECTION
---------------
AOR Searchlight is copy protected using a system which places a token
on your hard disk when you install the program. The program will only work on
the disk you installed it to. There is no dongle or key-disk, so once
installed the program runs completely normally and you will not be
inconvenienced (unlike other schemes).
Specific points to remember:
1. The distribution disk contains a two tokens. This means that you can
install up to two complete copies of the software on separate machines
at once. You cannot transfer the program to another machine without
first moving one of the tokens back onto the original distribution disk
then re-installing. The tokens can easily be moved with the program
that is provided. Contact your AOR distributor if you need additional
copies of the software.
2. You should keep you original disk in a safe place away from strong magnetic
fields, high humidity or other environmental conditions that could damage it.
You will not be able to re-install the software or move it to another machine
without the original distribution disk.
3. Two hidden files are copied to a hidden subdirectory of the AOR Searchlight
directory (SEARCH.CCC and CCONTROL.SYS) when you install the software.
These contain configuration information for the copy protection scheme and are
normal DOS format files. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES. If these files are deleted, AOR Searchlight will not run.
4. If you are using a backup utility, make sure that the two hidden files are
not backed up. When restored, the copy protection scheme may not be able to
validate the installation and AOR Searchlight will not run. Most backup
utilities do not touch these files because they have the hidden, system and
read-only attributes set. The two copy protection files also do not have the
archive bit set, so you should be able to exclude them from backups by setting
up your backup software to ignore files without an archive bit. Remember, it
is not the backup but the restore that can cause problems.
5. The /d+ option of the PC-Kwik disk cache software from Multisoft Corporation
is not compatible with the copy protection scheme and should be temporarilly
disabled when installing AOR Searchlight or moving the token. HyperCache also
affects the copy protection scheme in the same way because of non-standard
methods of accessing the floppy disk drive. Again, it should be temporarily
disabled, but both caches may be used at other times.
6. The copy protection scheme is compatible with disk drives compressed with
SuperStor, Stacker and DoubleSpace. However, you should temporarily remove
the token from the hard disk when installing one of these compression
utilities because the protection will appear invalid when the drives are
compressed. The disk compression utilities warn you of this in their manuals.
7. The copy protection scheme is known to be compatible with the following
disk defragmenters: Central Point's Compress, Digital Research's Diskopt,
Stac's Sdefrag and Microsoft's Defrag.
8. The copy protection scheme is not currently compatible with Windows NT.
9. The copy protection scheme is not compatible with non-standard floppy
disk systems. At present (7/95) this includes the following PCs:
Evesham Vale Voyager laptop
Zeos Pentiums
It is possible to install onto a PC with a non-standard floppy disk (or no
floppy disk) using a networked standard drive. The easiest way to do this
if you do not already have a network is to use the INTERLNK or INTERSVR
utilities supplied with MS-DOS.
10. The copy protection scheme is compatible with Windows 95. However,
you can completely erase your tokens using Explorer to drag and drop the
AOR Searchlight directory onto the Recycle bin. Although the token files are
not deleted, they cannot be restored to their original positions on disk.
EXPLORER DOES NOT GIVE WARNINGS LIKE FILE MANAGER UNDER WINDOWS 3.X!.
IMPORTING PC-MANAGER MEMORY DATA
--------------------------------
It is now possible to import memory data from PC-MANAGER or
PC-MANAGER memory data created by other AOR applications. An extra menu
option has been added to the "Memory" menu: "Import from PC-MANAGER".
This new feature reads ASCII text files containing AR8000 memory data of
the form:
MXA00 RF0076075000 ST02500 MD1 AT0 TM-79dBm
and converts it to AOR Searchlight format. The ASCII text file name must
have the extension .MEM and should be copied into the AOR Searchlight
directory before conversion.
Importing creates one or more AOR Searchlight memory files (also with the
.MEM extension). The output filename(s) are the same as the input except
that a two-digit count is added to the end of the name. For example,
the ASCII input filename "TEST.MEM" is converted to "TEST00.MEM",
"TEST01.MEM", etc... This allows the data to be broken up into several
Searchlight memory files if needs be.
USING SCREEN SAVERS
-------------------
Some screen savers may interfere with Searchlight when they first operate.
Under some circumstances a run time error can occur because of the
addition of extra system resources that these screen savers demand. For
reliable operation over long periods, screen savers should be disabled.
